The candidate presidential of Peru, Ricardo Belmontreturned to the public eye in Mexico after, during his campaign closing rally, he took up one of the former president’s phrases Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
During his speech, he stated that to eradicate crime in his country, one of the main concerns of the electorate, the example of public officials and authorities is essential.
For this reason, he expressed: “A man in his law does not threaten, he embraces. We want hugs and not bullets“.

The candidate for the presidency of Peru had already shown his admiration for the former federal president, since on May 9, 2019, he attended his morning conference to speak in front of him.
When speaking, Belmont explained that he met López Obrador through social networks and introduced himself as former mayor of Lima on two occasions. He recalled that at the time he competed against Alberto Fujimori, in addition to his time in the Congress and his presidential aspiration, a position that he now sought again.
During his speech, Belmont said he felt excited to attend one of the conferences and praised that López Obrador “confronted neoliberalism. We would have to ask him what material you are made of, because very few men dare,” he expressed.
Likewise, he assured that the then President of Mexico represented a hope for Latin America and that he had the opportunity to become a “great latin american leader”.
Belmont also praised the daily press conferences, noting that it was the first time that a president, after being elected, appeared daily before journalists and responded with patience and perseverance, which he described as “worthy of a man with unique characteristics.”
Even during his participation, he compared himself to the then president by pointing out that he felt “a déjà vu of my life in his personality, with characteristics that I did not have nor with the social networks that I could have had at that time, which did not exist.”

He indicated that the reason for his visit was to reflect aloud, in which he recalled that his purpose as mayor of Lima was to “recover the homeland, self-esteem, love for what is ours, our traditions and the sense of belonging to our people and the neighborhood,” and maintained that this objective was being fulfilled by López Obrador with his actions towards the country.
Finally, he wished him success and congratulated the journalists present, reiterating that the president of Mexico is a reference beyond Mexico.
Given his words, the now retired politician thanked him for his participation.
