ATHENS – The Greek Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has banned the burning of plant waste and open flames in order to reduce the number of man-made fires, with fines of up to 200,000 euros or imprisonment.
Works that emit sparks or open flames, fireworks and smoke from beekeeping are prohibited when the danger index reaches high, very high or alert level.
According to the new Criminal Code, arson is punishable by imprisonment and fines of up to 200,000 euros, without suspension or commutation.
Violations provide for administrative fines of up to 50,000 euros.
“Prevention is everyone’s responsibility”, announced the Ministry.
