There was a serious accident at the European Hill Race Eschdorf on Sunday morning. The police report this. At around 10:10 a.m. a racing car lost control and collided with the track barrier. Three people were injured: the driver and two marshals.
One of the marshals sustained serious injuries and had to be flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter. As the police announced late in the afternoon, the 48-year-old woman did not survive the accident. The driver was taken away in an ambulance after receiving initial medical treatment. According to initial findings, the second marshal escaped with minor injuries. Two rescue helicopters and several ambulances were in use.
The race management canceled the race and closed the route to further events. Psychological support was offered to those affected and witnesses.
The exact cause of the accident is unclear. The racing car was confiscated and investigations are ongoing.
The Eschdorf Hill Race is considered one of the largest motorsport events in Luxembourg. On the 1,850 meter long route, vehicles reach top speeds of up to 235 km/h. This year’s 34th edition was only the third since the race resumed after a five-year Covid break.
The accident occurred on the second and final day of racing. The organizers have canceled the entire event as a result of the accident and want to refund the tickets.
