The anniversary, which marks 32 years since the first democratic elections in the country, was in fact marked by the return to current affairs of a crucial issue: the widespread racially motivated attacks against African migrants. “We will not allow concern for the phenomenon of irregular migration to fuel xenophobia against people from other African countries and from every other part of the world”, were the words of President Cyril Rampahosa during the ceremony in Bloemfontein.
