Young people in the Arctic: Future opportunities and democracy at Future of Greenland 2026

“Future of Greenland” is the name of Greenland’s business youth conference, which this year will be held on 6 May. The conference focuses on what it is like to be young in the Arctic, democracy and the opportunities in our society and in the world.

In 2024, Member of Parliament for Inuit Ataqatigiit Aaja Chemnitz warmed up the young people with gymnastics before she spoke about cooperation across the Arctic with, among others, Alaskan senator Lisa Murkowski.
    Leiff Josefsen

In 2024, several of de young presenters standing ovation from the audience in the hall. Their messages that they would like to be involved and included in the adults’ conversations about the future were well received when Greenland’s Business carried out “Future of Greenland”, which is a youth edition of the conference “Future Greenland”which Greenland’s Business has carried out since 2009.

    A conversation about democracy

In 2024, 450 young people participated in the conference, and the goal is to reach approximately the same number of participants this year, when the conference takes place in Katuaq in Nuuk on 6 May.

The target group is the oldest pupils in primary school as well as pupils at GUX, KTI, business schools and other secondary education.

The young people are not the only ones invited. Because all the party leaders also come to listen and engage in dialogue with the young people. Chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen contributes with the last presentation of the day, where he gets the opportunity to reflect on the day’s messages. Quite deliberately, he does not open the conference or set the direction for the day – because when the young people speak, they must have space and then it’s just a matter of listening. Also when you are chairman of the entire country.

    About the Future of Greenland

For the 3rd time, Greenland’s Business opens the doors to the youth business conference, Future of Greenland. In 2024, the Future of Greenland was held in both Nuuk and Sisimiut for today’s young people – the business world of the future!

At Future of Greenland, young people meet business and politicians. Dialogue, presentations and exciting debates will fill the day, which is rounded off by sending a clear message to the Future Greenland business conference, which will be held 19-20. May, about what the country’s decision-makers must prioritize.

The youth conference is sponsored by the Bank of Greenland, Nunafonden, Naviair, Polar Seafood and the British Embassy.

    – We will talk about democracy and why it is important. For this, we have invited, among other things, Chief Justice from the Norwegian Ombudsman Morten Nornild. We will also talk about sustainability based on the heading “when business takes responsibility”. And then we will look at the opportunities for young Greenlanders in the Nordic region, based on a presentation from Nordjobb’s project manager Sara Jacobsen, says director of Greenland Business, Christian Keldsen.

If with the conference here in 2026 we can create the same energy as we experienced in 2024, then we have come a long way. The curiosity that the young people expressed was very exciting.

Christian Keldsen, Director of Greenland’s Business

From art, culture and sports to business

Nalik Ventures and Visit Greenland talk about entrepreneurship, and then Angunnguaq Larsen and Nina Skydsbjerg will give the presentation “Crazy Greenland – when art and culture become a business”, which looks at how you can make a living from your hobby or creativity.

As an extension of this, there is also a focus on sports as an access ticket to a business career, which head of the secretariat at Elite Sport Greenland Muusaarannguaq Ostermann-Søholm and co-owner of Polar Seafood Laila Friis-Salling tells more about.

In 2018, Laila Friis-Salling participated in the discipline of freestyle skiing in halfpipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The last time the youth business conference Future of Greenland was held was in 2024 in Katuaq. In the past, the conference has also been held in Sisimiut.

    Biology and Defense

    – Finally, we will also talk about the Greenlandic values in biology based on a presentation from the head of department for SILA, Aviâja Lyberth Hauptmann and a few of the students. And then the Arctic Council will come with their Youth Council, and then we expect that the Armed Forces will talk a little about the situation in the world and the Arctic basic training in Kangerlussuaq, says Christian Keldsen and adds:

    – If with the conference here in 2026 we can create the same energy as we experienced in 2024, then we have come a long way. The curiosity that the young people expressed was very exciting. We hope for happy young people leaving Katuaq after having a good day. And when they go, they go precisely towards the future and have hopefully gained inspiration for what it can also bring and how you yourself can influence it.
