The government has welcomed LUCELEC’s installation of a 10-kilowatt solar PV system at St Lucy’s Home, recognising it as a major step in reducing operational costs and advancing sustainability for elderly care.
This initiative promotes both support for the nation’s elderly and the adoption of renewable energy. Minister for Elderly Affairs Emma Hippolyte expressed gratitude to LUCELEC and St Lucy’s for their focus on this vulnerable group.
Hippolyte described the solar installation as a vital, long-term benefit to the Home, ensuring continuous savings and improved comfort for seniors. She emphasised the Government’s responsibility to uphold the dignity of seniors, recognise their contributions and affirm continuing support.
The Minister also cited the importance of partnership in delivering meaningful social support, saying, “Each one of us, Government, private citizens, and corporate partners, has a role to play in ensuring that we take care of our seniors. This is a shared responsibility.”
Since assuming office, Hippolyte has visited care facilities across the island to better understand their needs and advocate for increased support. “Some homes require more assistance than others, and we are working to ensure that the resources available are distributed in a way that provides meaningful support across the board,” she said.
The minister hopes this project inspires more public-private collaboration to help other elderly and disadvantaged homes across Saint Lucia.
In addition to social benefits, the installation supports the government’s long-term energy strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate the impact of global oil price volatility. “We want to transition to alternative energy solutions that can reduce costs and improve sustainability, particularly for institutions providing essential social services,” Hippolyte said.
LUCELEC’s Assistant Chief Engineer, Carryl Haynes, said the EC$43,000 system demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting community institutions with sustainable energy. He added that such initiatives enhance resilience, lower costs, and support national progress.
The Ministry of Equity said the donation is a strong example of collaboration for elderly care. It shows how partnerships improve dignity and support for Saint Lucia’s elderly.
