Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has called for a collective and mature approach to Social Security reform, urging national stakeholders to rise above partisan interests and work together to secure the system’s future.
Addressing the Social Security Reform Conference on April 21, Dr. Drew stressed that the issue must be treated as one of national importance, requiring broad cooperation and consensus among political leaders and key stakeholders. He warned against allowing political agendas to shape the reform process, instead encouraging unity.
The Prime Minister urged political parties to set aside differences and approach the discussions with a spirit of solidarity, positioning Social Security as a unifying national priority rather than a political tool.
Reflecting on the historical courage that led to the establishment of Social Security in St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Drew noted that meaningful reform today will demand a similar level of resolve. He acknowledged that past leaders faced significant challenges when introducing transformative policies, but emphasised that such decisions laid the foundation for stability and dignity among citizens.
Dr. Drew described Social Security reform as a national necessity that must transcend party lines, advocating for a collaborative approach involving government, labour, the private sector, and civil society. He underscored the importance of grounding decisions in empirical evidence and long-term sustainability, ensuring that the system remains viable for generations to come.
The Prime Minister further highlighted the far-reaching implications of the current discussions, noting that the decisions taken now will directly affect both present and future generations. He called on all participants to remain focused on preserving and strengthening the system’s reliability, particularly in supporting workers, pensioners, and vulnerable groups.
As consultations continue, Dr. Drew reiterated that unity and collaboration must remain at the forefront, describing Social Security as a critical pillar of national development that must be safeguarded through shared responsibility and collective action.
