PANAMA CITY, Panama, Apr 27, CMC – Guyana’s sprint star Dequan Farrell produced a sensational performance over the weekend with a record-breaking run in the 200 metres to bring the curtain down on the South American Youth Games.
Farrell stormed to victory in the final in 21.18 seconds on Saturday, eclipsing the old mark of 21.28 seconds set by Argentina’s Tomás Mondino in 2022.
He finished ahead of Ecuador’s Mateus Mendez, who also went under the old mark to finish second in 21.24 seconds, while Brazil’s Pedro Nunes took bronze in 21.74.
Fellow Guyanese athlete, Gordon Thompson narrowly missed out on a medal, placing fourth in 21.87 seconds.
Farrell’s victory capped an outstanding campaign, as he added the 200m title to his earlier success as a member of Guyana’s gold medal-winning 4x100m relay team.
His exploits complemented teammate Ezekiel Millington’s win in the boys’ 100m, as Guyana ended the meet with seven medals (three gold, one silver and three bronze).
