Fidesz and KDNP formally requested the European Parliament on Wednesday to lift the rule of law mechanism against Hungary.
Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz delegation, wrote in a statement: they have officially requested that the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) immediately draft and submit to the plenary session a motion for a resolution proposing the immediate termination of the Article 7 procedure against Hungary.
Enough of Brussels continuing to punish the Hungarian people for political reasons. For us, Hungary remains our top priority, and we stand up for the Hungarian people,”
he stated.
The head of the delegation noted that following the Tisza Party’s election victory, Manfred Weber, president of the European People’s Party, also acknowledged that the Article 7 procedure had been applied against Hungary for the purpose of exerting political pressure. He added:
in their view, there was never a genuine rule-of-law issue, the procedure was a political punitive action.
Brussels abused its power to keep Hungary under constant political pressure through this procedure, to silence national voices, and to interfere in the Hungarian elections on the side of pro-Brussels forces, he wrote, adding: “this long-running saga, as it stands, is unacceptable,” and it must come to an immediate end.
