The meeting that will possibly decide the future course of European basketball is scheduled to take place today at the FIBA offices in Geneva, between high-ranking officials of the NBA, FIBA and the Euroleague, with a discussion agenda dominated by the issue of the creation of NBA Europe and with reports that the NBA and FIBA have received offers from more than 20 existing basketball and football clubs, including several Euroleague teams. According to the same sources, the offers reach the dizzying amount of 1 billion euros.
At the same time, the interest is focused on the target cities that the two leagues are “hunting” to include in the organization being created.
Cities that are big markets because of the football clubs that represent them (eg Napoli, Manchester United). Each EuroLeague team will be able to participate either through the right to apply for a permanent franchise in NBA Europe by paying a significant amount, or through the ability to qualify for the league through a merit-based process.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, NBA Europe and Middle East Managing Director Giorgos Aivazoglou and EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno are expected to be in attendance. It is recalled that any changes will be scheduled for the next season, 2027-2028, but the main goal is to avoid a particularly damaging schism, like that of the 2000-01 season, when the Euroleague and the FIBA Suproleague coexisted.
