Opposition leader María Corina Machado stated that poverty in Venezuela reached 86% of the population and described the country’s economic and social situation as dramatic.
Machado sent an audiovisual message that was projected during the annual dinner of the Libertad Foundation, held on Monday, April 27 in Buenos Aires.
“The economic and social situation is dramatic. Imagine what an accumulated annual inflation is in April of 650%, an average family income of 200 dollars a month, more than 86% poverty. This is why I want to be very clear: the transition in Venezuela cannot be postponed,” declared the leader.
Machado insisted that “without political freedom there is no economic freedom.” He added that the way out of the crisis requires “institutional reconstruction, the reestablishment of the rule of law and a clear, credible and verifiable electoral calendar.”
The opponent explained that without legal guarantees it is impossible to attract investment and generate sustained economic growth.
Machado’s message generated attention among those attending the liberal event in Argentina, where former president Mauricio Macri and other regional leaders participated. The Venezuelan leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner, reiterated the urgency of a profound political change in her country.
