Swimmers were back in action locally, competing at the 6th Annual Lyford Swim Club Invitational, hosted at the Betty Kelly-Kenning National Swim Complex over the weekend.
At the end of the meet, Mako Aquatics Club led the team standings with 1,151 points and 102 medals (49 gold, 30 silver, and 23 bronze). The Blue Waves Swim Club racked up a total of 717.50 points and 61 medals (19 gold, 23 silver, and 19 bronze) to finish in second place. The Barracuda Swim Club recorded 581.50 points for third place. The team secured 11 gold, 19 silver, and 16 bronze medals for a total of 46 medals at the one-day meet.
Mako had several standout performances from its swimmers.
CARIFTA medalist Isabella Munroe is back in top form. She secured a trio of first-place finishes in the girls’ 11-12 100 meters (m) freestyle, 100m fly, and 400m free finals.
She dropped time in the 400m free, shaving her seed time of 5:19.84 down to 5:16.44 for a first-place finish. Munroe, 12, also excelled in the 100 fly, notching a final mark of 1:15.91. She was just as electric in the 100 free final, touching the wall in 1:03.91.
CARIFTA team member Saleste Gibson also captured two top finishes for Mako.
She powered her way to a time of 4:46.02 in the girls’ 15-and-over 400 free final, winning that event. Her second first-place finish of the meet came in the girls’ 15-and-over 50m breast final. She swam 37.36 seconds to improve on her seed time of 39.37 seconds.
Mako swimmer Mason Hanna also had a busy meet over the weekend.
He claimed victories in the boys’ 9-10 50m free, 50m back, and 200m free finals.
He led all swimmers in the 50m free final with a top time of 31.75 seconds. The 10-year-old Mako swimmer won the 50m back final in 36.26 seconds and the 200m free final in 2:43.40.
Blue Waves’ swimmer Charlotte King was phenomenal in the girls’ 8-and-under (8U) category.
She placed first in the 50m free (36.11 seconds), 50m back (44.81 seconds), 50m breast (47.29 seconds), and the 200m medley relay (2:46.92).
Payton Bostwick, 8, also dominated in the 8U girls’ division, picking up gold medal finishes in the 200m free, 50m fly, and 200m medley relay.
Bostwick swam to victory in 2:55.50 in the 200m free final. She turned in another brilliant swim in the 50m fly final, clocking 37.88 seconds. Her time was significantly lower than her seed mark of 38.02 seconds. Bostwick was also a part of the girls’ 200m medley relay team that swam 2:46.92.
Randol Dorsett and Katelin-Dahlia Hanna delivered a number of top-tier performances for Barracuda Swim Club.
The former collected gold medals in the boys’ 9-10 200m individual medley (IM) and the 100m back finals. He recorded times of 3:00.48 and 1:23.54, respectively.
The 10-year-old swimmer also picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 100m breast final in 1:38.39 and the 200m medley relay, with the team swimming 2:33.05.
Hanna accumulated three first-place finishes in the girls’ 11-12 50m back (35.98 seconds), 200m IM (2:57.48), and 100m back (1:25.64).
The host club’s Lyall Menzies and Mason Sadowski earned podium finishes.
Menzies, who was a part of the 2026 CARIFTA team, won three of his four events.
He outswam competitors with times of 1:16.15 in the boys’ 11-12 100m fly final, 1:06.22 in the 100m free final, and 1:21.43 in the 100m back final.
Menzies placed second overall in 31.05 seconds in the 50m free final.
As for Sadowski, he won the boys’ 8U 50m free in 31.95 seconds, the 50m breast in 47.46 seconds, and the 50m fly in 37.17 seconds.
Next up on the local aquatics season is the 2026 Lightning Aquatics Meet, set for May 8-9.
