A 36-year-old man is expected to face a series of charges after allegedly attempting to break into his wife’s apartment, stealing her cellphone, assaulting police officers and resisting arrest in Mayaro.
Police said the incident began around 10 p.m. on Sunday when the woman, a 35-year-old Venezuelan national, was liming with her husband at a bar along Guayaguayare Road, Mayaro.
During the outing, the man allegedly grabbed the woman’s Samsung S23 cellphone, valued at $3,500, from her hand and kept it without her permission.
The woman later left the establishment and went to her apartment. Fearing the man would come looking for her, she locked the apartment and went to sleep at another nearby apartment.
Around 2.15 a.m. on Monday, the woman heard banging at her apartment door and what sounded like someone attempting to force entry.
She also heard the man calling out to her to open the door while making threats.
A report was made to the Mayaro Police Station and PC Sutherland and PC Charles responded.
When officers arrived, they allegedly saw the man attempting to open the woman’s apartment door.
The officers attempted to arrest him, but police said he violently resisted and began kicking and cuffing both officers.
A struggle reportedly ensued for some time before Cpl Mahadeo and other officers from the Mayaro Police Station arrived to assist.
The man was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
During the incident, one of the responding officers also discovered that his Samsung Galaxy cellphone, valued at $2,650, had been damaged.
Police said the suspect was searched and a Samsung cellphone later identified by the woman as her stolen device was found in his possession.
The man was arrested and taken to the Mayaro Police Station.
The two officers sought medical attention at the Mayaro District Hospital, where they were treated and discharged.
Arrangements were also made for the woman’s statement to be recorded through an interpreter.
