A used car dealer has been found guilty of stealing more than $42 000 from a customer over a two-year period and laundering the proceeds of the crimes.
Dwayne Omar Clarke was unanimously found guilty of stealing money from customers and laundering the proceeds.
A nine-member jury in the No. 5A Supreme Court convicted the resident of Warrens Crescent, St Michael, of stealing $18 000 belonging to Joy-Ann Mapp, the proceeds of a Republic Bank Limited cheque made payable to MD Auto Sales between August 17, 2019, and July 6, 2021, and to possessing the $18 000, being the proceeds of a crime, knowing or having reasonable grounds to suspect that it was derived or realised directly or indirectly from theft between the same dates.
He has also been found guilty of stealing $24 500 belonging to Mapp, the proceeds of a Republic Bank Limited cheque made payable to Dwayne Clarke on February 4, 2020 and possessing the funds, being the proceeds of a crime and knowing or having reasonable grounds to suspect that it was derived or realised directly or indirectly from criminal conduct between February 4,2020 and July 6. 2021.
Justice Christopher Birch remanded him to Dodds Prison until April 10, when the case continues.
Clarke is self-represented while Principal State Counsel Romario Straker, State Counsel Maya Kellman and State Counsel Eleazar Williams prosecuted the case.
