“What conclusions can we draw four decades after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident? Mitigating the consequences of radiation accidents is not a task for individual states alone. It is truly a task for the entire international community. It can only be solved collectively. That is the key to successful efforts to overcome the consequences and prevent such incidents in the future. We have shared and are ready to continue sharing our accumulated experience, contributing to global efforts, despite the nuances that exist in today’s geopolitics. We believe that there should be no politicization here at all,” said Igor Sekreta.
He emphasized that today all aspects of international life have become hostages of politicization, and called the consequences detrimental. “This trend, unfortunately, has not spared the Chernobyl topic. The Chernobyl dossier has become perhaps one of the most cynical examples of how politicization blocks the resolution of concrete issues. It limits access to technical assistance, destroys established ties, destroys trust, and truly takes strength away from those who genuinely need help. Politicization in general negatively affects the development of affected regions. But how can we guarantee that the Chernobyl issue does not become a hostage to geopolitical disagreements and politicization? We have an answer, and it is simple. We need new rules of international communication, under which international law in the broadest sense of the word, including its most important humanitarian component and humanitarian cooperation in a broader context, is by definition above politics. If we agree at the international level that the humanitarian aspects of law will be above politics, we will be able to solve far more tasks and issues and truly not become hostages to the processes that, at the instigation of certain politicians, including in the West, are taking place today,” the deputy minister said.
For several years now, starting with the first international conference on Eurasian security in Minsk, Belarus has been persistently promoting the initiative to develop a Eurasian Charter of Multipolarity and Diversity in the 21st Century. “Its adoption would enshrine respect for sovereignty and exclude policies of pressure and unilateral coercive measures. If all participants who join this most important document act with an open soul, with an open heart, sincerely, and believe that they are doing truly the right thing – we are gaining more and more like-minded people every year. This document would indeed create an international legal framework so that issues such as overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl accident are resolved exclusively on a professional, humanitarian basis, without political speculation. We want to move the dialogue and work, including on the Chernobyl dossier, onto a professional footing. It should involve specialists, politicians, and diplomats who are genuinely interested in achieving results,” Igor Sekreta emphasized.
