Criminal investigators in Ostrava charged a 30-year-old man with the crime of public endangerment and other offenses after he endangered dozens of people with his reckless driving. The man was driving despite the ban and refused a drug test after being arrested. The court decided on his custodial prosecution, while he faces up to eight years in prison if found guilty.
The incident began when officers spotted a black Mercedes with a driver they knew was not allowed to drive. The vehicle was stopped, but the driver first pretended to cooperate and then ran away. During the chase, he drove at an extreme speed, sometimes exceeding 200 km/h, ran red lights, threatened drivers and pedestrians, and even entered the sidewalk or grassy area between houses.
The chase ended at the intersection of Plzeňská and Horní streets, where the driver lost control at high speed and crashed. The police subsequently detained him. There was also a passenger in the vehicle who was injured. At the same time, the police are calling on witnesses, especially pedestrians, to report on line 158.
