Four athletes from the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) are set to represent the institution at the 2026 Penn Relays when they contest the 4 x 100 metres relay on Friday, 24 April and the 4 x 400 m on Saturday, 25 April at 8:45 am.
Nathaniel Alfred, Josh Thomas, Kashay Stephen and Karmal Joseph will carry GBSS colours at the historic meet, which attracts elite secondary school and collegiate athletes from across the Caribbean, North America and beyond.
The team is accompanied by Principal Kenny James, along with coaches Lee Cuffie and Nicholas Benjamin, who will oversee preparations and competition management during the event.
Principal James said expectations within the camp are high, citing both tradition and opportunity as major motivating factors for the athletes. “I expect the boys to go out there and represent the only way we know how — with the pride and joy of representing our alma mater, the GBSS,” James said. “At the end of the day, 2 things remain true: Non Palma Sine Labore — no reward without labour — and iron sharpens iron. Our young men of steel will be better for having competed at this level.”
James also expressed gratitude to team sponsor NAGICO and the GBSS Alumni International Foundation for their continued support and the pivotal role they played in ensuring that GBSS is represented at the Penn Relays.
All 4 athletes bring recent regional experience into the competition, having represented Team Grenada at the recently concluded CARIFTA Games. That exposure, school officials believe, has strengthened the team’s preparation for the demanding Penn Relays environment.
Meanwhile, 400 metres standout Qwannel Pierre is listed as a reserve with the team but is not expected to contest the 4 x 400 metres relay. Team management has opted to prioritise his continued recovery after he sustained an injury during the 2026 InterCol Games.
The appearance continues GBSS’s long-standing presence at the Penn Relays, a meet widely regarded as a proving ground for emerging sprint talent, and provides another opportunity for Grenadian athletes to showcase their abilities on a global stage.
