Ghana has announced the abolition of visa requirements for all African nationals, a measure which will come into effect on May 25, 2026, on Africa Day. This decision marks an important turning point: the country thus becomes the fifth state on the continent to completely open its borders to Africans, including Tunisians.
With this reform, Ghana joins a very restricted circle made up of Benin, Gambia, Rwanda and Seychelles, the only African countries to offer visa-free access to all citizens of the continent without distinction.
For Tunisian travelers, this decision concretely means the possibility of traveling to Ghana without a prior visa, under the same conditions as any other African. The Ghanaian government has confirmed that this opening applies to all African nationalities, strengthening mobility, tourism and business opportunities.
A strong signal in favor of African integration
Beyond the practical dimension, this announcement is part of a broader dynamic supported by the African Union, aimed at facilitating the free movement of people on the continent. Opening borders is seen as a key lever for stimulating economic exchanges, tourism and intra-African investments.
If the measure is symbolically strong, it does not necessarily mean a total absence of formalities. In the case of Ghana, the authorities have mentioned the establishment of an electronic system to obtain free authorization, which maintains a certain level of border control.
Despite this progress, only five African countries out of 54 today offer complete visa-free access to all Africans: Benin, Gambia, Rwanda, Seychelles and Ghana (new entrant in 2026).
Ghana’s entry into this closed circle constitutes a major announcement for African mobility. It confirms a progressive trend towards more openness, even if total free movement on the continent still remains limited.
For Tunisians as for all Africans, this development opens up new perspectives for travel, in a context where administrative barriers still remain numerous elsewhere in Africa.
