In the aftermath of Brexit and changing tourism trends, the United Kingdom has lost its leading position in Wizz Air’s passenger traffic in Hungary after five years, with Italy taking over the top spot for family visits.
According to the airline, family visits continue to dominate among the four main travel types they track, accounting for nearly half of passengers’ motivations; however, a significant shift has occurred in this segment.

While the UK route still led the list by a wide margin in 2021, by 2025, traffic to Italy took the top spot, growing sixfold over four years.
Meanwhile, Spain and Germany have maintained their positions among the top destinations, while Romania has moved up to fifth place, which is an indirect confirmation of the airline’s route expansion in Transylvania, they add.
Weekend city breaks are also becoming increasingly popular, and in response, Wizz Air says its schedule now offers more options than ever before.
In addition to classic vacation destinations, more and more people are choosing cities in France, Romania, and Türkiye for short getaways; as part of the expansion of its offerings, two new Adriatic destinations, Dubrovnik and Zadar, have also been added to the lineup, the airline emphasizes.
Business traffic has also risen significantly; here, Türkiye showed the most dynamic growth alongside Italy, moving up to fourth place by 2025.
Wizz Air is preparing for another record-breaking summer on the Hungarian market this year; the airline will welcome passengers during the summer season with 15 new routes, 19 Budapest-based aircraft, and nearly three million seats.
Among Hungarian travelers, Spain remains the most popular vacation destination with ten available cities, but there is also strong demand for Greece, where Kefalonia and Kalamata have appeared on the map as new destinations.
Egypt is also showing spectacular growth, having become the sixth most popular destination thanks to the popularity of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. The airline emphasizes that the development of its network continues to be shaped by passenger feedback and the increasingly diverse travel habits of Hungarians.
