US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner after a gunman opened fire on security, Reuters reported.
The incident happened at the Hilton Hotel, where the event was held with about 2,600 attendees. The assailant, armed with a shotgun, fired at Secret Service agents, injuring one officer and arresting the assailant. “The attacker was defeated by the brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said after the incident.
After the shots were fired, the attendees began to run away, while the agents pinned down the high-ranking officials, including Marco Rubio, Robert F. Kennedy and Doug Burgum. It is assumed that the attacker acted independently.
The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a traditional event attended by members of the media, politicians and senior administration officials.
This is not the first security incident involving Trump. In July 2024, at a rally in Butler, he was wounded in the ear during an assassination attempt, while another attempt was thwarted in West Palm Beach a few months later. Historically, a similar attack took place in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was wounded in front of the same hotel.
