Despite arriving in strong form following his semi-final run in Monte-Carlo, Vacherot was unable to convert that momentum on the Spanish clay, losing 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 after more than three hours on court.
The encounter was finely balanced throughout, with both players pushing each other in long rallies and extended service games. Vacherot edged the opening set in a tiebreak and appeared on course to close out the match in the second, holding three match points at 5-4 on his opponent’s serve. However, Nava held firm under pressure, saving all three before turning the match around to claim the set.
That missed opportunity proved decisive, as the American gained confidence and control in the final set. Vacherot, who had shown resilience and composure during his recent performances, was unable to regain the upper hand.
While the result will come as a disappointment, particularly given how close he came to victory, the match underlined the fine margins at this level and the challenges of maintaining form across consecutive tournaments.
