More than three years after the fatal shooting of nineteen-year-old Dyandre Chee during a police pursuit in Orange Walk, a jury has found police officers Salomen Cowo and Esmin Flores guilty of murder.

The case attracted national attention in March 2023 after conflicting accounts emerged over the circumstances of Chee’s death. Police maintained that the officers believed they were coming under gunfire during the chase, while eyewitnesses and Chee’s companions insisted that they were unarmed and were fired upon without warning. Charged just days after the incident, Cowo and Flores remained at the center of a lengthy legal battle that sparked public protests and renewed scrutiny of police use of force. Now, after years of court proceedings, a jury has delivered its judgement on the case that continues to impact Chee’s grieving family and the Orange walk community.
