A 19-year-old man was shot dead by a soldier during a police raid at his Fyzabad home on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly pointed a firearm at members of the search team.
The deceased was identified as Aaron Anderson of Delhi Road, Fyzabad.
According to a police report, officers of the Home Invasion Team, accompanied by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), went to Anderson’s home around 4.27 pm to execute a search warrant for firearms and ammunition.
Officers reportedly took up positions around the house while a breach team entered. Police said they encountered Anderson upstairs, where he allegedly pointed a firearm at them.
Fearing for their lives, a TTDF sergeant fired one round from his G36 rifle, striking Anderson.
The firearm reportedly fell from Anderson’s hand. Officers then observed that he had suffered a head injury and recovered a loaded Glock pistol.
Anderson was taken to the Point Fortin Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5.06 pm after being attended to by Dr Dipchand.
Crime Scene Investigators recovered a Glock 19 pistol, a magazine containing 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a spent 5.56mm shell.
