Amir Zuccolo is the new mayor of Prince Edward Island’s capital city, and will be the first woman to sit in the chair since the 1970s.
A total of seven candidates were in the running for mayor. Elections P.E.I.’s unofficial results show that Zuccolo led the pack with just more than 5,000 votes, over 1,500 more than incumbent Philip Brown, who was seeking his third term.
“After a long campaign, we were continually hearing that people in the city wanted change. There were different issues depending on where we went, but change was on everyone’s mind — and this time, it was on the ballot,” Zuccolo told CBC News.
She will be just the second woman to lead the capital city as mayor. Dorothy Corrigan held the position in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“I had a lot of support from women of all ages throughout the campaign … all the way from young students right through to seniors really wanting to see more female perspective in politics, particularly at the leadership level,” she said. “It feels great to be able to deliver on that.”
Zuccolo said her first plan of action as mayor will be to get together with the new council, which will include four new faces, and start working on key issues.
Three of the city’s 10 positions on council were acclaimed, while the remaining seven wards were decided by voters.
The 10 representatives elected to city council are:
- Matt Pelletier: Ward 1 — Queens Square.
- Justin Muttart: Ward 2 — Belvedere (incumbent/acclaimed).
- Norman Beck: Ward 3 — Brighton (incumbent/acclaimed).
- Ted Kitson: Ward 4 — Spring Park.
- Kevin Ramsay: Ward 5 — Ellen’s Creek (incumbent).
- Sue Fraser: Ward 6 — Mount Edward.
- John McAleer: Ward 7 — Beach Grove (incumbent/acclaimed).
- Corey Driscoll: Ward 8 — Highfield.
- Julie McCabe: Ward 9 — Stonepark (incumbent).
- Terry Bernard: Ward 10 — Falconwood (incumbent).
After conceding the race and congratulating Zuccolo, Brown told CBC News he’s pleased with his campaign and record but that the voters spoke.
“I take my role as a public servant very seriously and I think that I can walk away and say that I’ve done a good job,” Brown said.
“I think that’s a legacy for me to say, ‘Look, I’ve done my service as a public … person, as a politician,’ and I have no regrets of what I did and what I accomplished.”
