Theme: “Our Journey… Our Legacy… Our Future”
On the occasion of the 48th Anniversary of the Independence of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Dominica Freedom Party extends warmest Independence greetings to all citizens and residents of our beloved Nature Isle, at home and throughout the Dominican diaspora.
As we celebrate November 3, 2026, we reflect on a journey that began with the attainment of political independence in 1978—a defining moment in our nation’s history, when Dominica assumed responsibility for charting its own destiny and shaping its future as a sovereign nation.
This year’s theme, “Our Journey… Our Legacy… Our Future,” invites us to reflect not only on how far we have travelled as a people, but also on the values, sacrifices, achievements and challenges that have shaped our national identity. It challenges us to consider what kind of Dominica we are building and what legacy we intend to leave for generations yet unborn.
OUR JOURNEY: A NATION BUILT ON COURAGE AND SACRIFICE
Our journey to independence was paved by the determination, courage and sacrifices of generations of Dominican men and women who believed in the promise of a free, democratic and self-governing nation.
We honor the contributions of our national leaders, workers, farmers, educators, public servants, entrepreneurs, community organisations, cultural practitioners and ordinary citizens whose collective efforts helped to build our country.
Independence, however, is not simply a historical achievement or an annual celebration. It is an ongoing responsibility. Political independence must be accompanied by economic opportunity, social justice, democratic participation, accountable leadership and respect for the rights and dignity of every citizen.
OUR LEGACY: PRESERVING THE VALUES THAT DEFINE US
Our national legacy is rooted in our resilience, cultural diversity, rich heritage, strong community traditions and the enduring spirit of the Dominican people.
We must preserve and strengthen the democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards, freedom of expression, independence of the Judiciary and respect for the rule of law upon which a free society depends.
The Dominica Freedom Party believes that the true measure of our independence is not simply the passage of time, but the quality of life of our people and the strength of the institutions that serve them.
We must never take democracy for granted. Good governance, transparency, accountability, integrity and responsible management of our national resources are essential to building public confidence and safeguarding our sovereignty.
Our legacy must also reflect a nation in which every Dominican, regardless of political affiliation, social standing, age, community or economic circumstances, enjoys equal dignity, opportunity and access to justice.
OUR FUTURE: A NEW NATIONAL COMMITMENT
As we look towards our 50th Anniversary of Independence in 2028, we must ask ourselves some fundamental questions:
- Are we creating sufficient opportunities for our young people to build meaningful and productive lives in Dominica?
- Are we providing our workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and small businesses with the environment and resources necessary to prosper?
- Are our education and healthcare systems adequately preparing and caring for our people?
- Are we managing our public finances and national resources responsibly, transparently and sustainably?
- Are our democratic institutions strong, independent and responsive to the people?
- Are we building a climate-resilient and economically sustainable nation that can withstand external shocks and natural disasters?
These are not partisan questions. They are national questions that demand serious reflection, responsible leadership and collective action.
Dominica must aspire to an economy that creates opportunities beyond political patronage; a society in which young people can fulfil their potential; a public service that is professional, efficient and accountable; and a system of governance that places the national interest above political and personal considerations.
We must also renew our commitment to protecting our natural environment, strengthening agriculture and food security, expanding tourism and other productive sectors, embracing technology and innovation, and ensuring that the benefits of national development reach all communities.
Our future must be one in which our young people are not compelled to leave their homeland in search of opportunity, but are empowered to remain, return, invest, innovate and contribute to the development of Dominica.
A CALL FOR UNITY, PARTICIPATION AND NATIONAL RENEWAL
The Dominica Freedom Party recognizes that our country faces important challenges, but we remain convinced that Dominica possesses the human talent, natural resources, cultural strength and collective determination to overcome them.
We therefore call on all Dominicans, especially our young people, to become active participants in the democratic and developmental process of our country. Our future cannot be left solely to politicians or political parties. It requires the engagement of citizens, civil society, the private sector, workers, farmers, professionals, community organisations and the Dominican diaspora.
We must move beyond political divisions and personalities and embrace a national vision founded on democracy, good governance, and the rule of law, social justice, equal opportunity and respect for human rights.
As we celebrate 48 years of independence, let us recommit ourselves to building a Dominica that is free, fair, inclusive, prosperous and accountable—a country in which the national interest always takes precedence over narrow political interests.
Our journey has shaped us. Our legacy defines us. Our future is ours to build.
May the Almighty continue to bless and guide the Commonwealth of Dominica and all its people.
Happy 48th Anniversary of Independence, Dominica!
