ISLAND HISTORY: The ancient Hawaiian sport of holua riding on Kauai

In his book “Kanuka of Kauai,” “Teller of Hawaiian Tales” Eric Knudsen (1872-1957) wrote about Umi, a legendary Hawaiian prince of Kauai, and his beloved sport of holua (sled) riding, and I quote: “He was an ardent sportsman, and his favorite amusement was racing with his friends on a holua down a stone slide from the top to the bottom of Waiawa ridge.
