This is what Nyugati tér would look like after the transformation – Photo: Dávid Vitézy’s Facebook page
Dávid Vitézy on his Facebook page presented the first plans for the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út tram line, i.e. the interlacing tram network in Pest. In his post, he wrote that on Monday the conceptual plans of the interwoven tram network in Pest will be brought before a specialist committee so that the main decisions necessary for the preparation of the licensing plans can be made. The capital started the planning with its own funds, according to Vitézy, with the change of government, it became possible for the development to be implemented with EU funds.
By building the missing section between Deák tér and Lehel tér, the Pesti Fonódó can be realized, which, according to the ideas, would provide connections between the city center and Buda without transfers from the Angyalföld, Rákosrendező, Újpalota and Újpest areas. I would connect these lines:
- from the south, lines 47 and 49, as well as one line coming from the new University of Applied Sciences quayside branch,
- from the north, if the 12th, 14th and Szegedi út overpasses are built, one of the lines coming from Újpalota (69) through Rákosrendező.
The new downtown section is expected to carry 44,000-49,000 passengers per day, and the development would save the citizens of Budapest 2,500 hours per day.
According to the plans, a green belt would be created on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út around the tramway, as if continuing the conversion of Károly körút 13 years ago. The Nyugati tér overpass would be demolished, and a green public space would be created instead of the bus terminus and the parking lot. The tram would run on the edge of a grassy track on Váci út. A real public square would be created on Lehel Square instead of the current tram terminus. According to Vitézy, the conceptual directions will be decided at Monday’s committee meeting, after which a lot of consultation and planning will be needed.
