PARAMARIBO — The police have recorded a report of abuse against the suspect LZ, alias ‘Afieka’, who was abused by a group of people at Zorg en Hoop airport on Saturday. The police message follows a video of the incident that is currently circulating on social media. The suspect had been arrested earlier that day in connection with a fatal shooting incident in Snesibergi, in the Brokopondo district.
The Brokopondo police received a report on Friday afternoon that a man had been shot dead at the aforementioned location. It was reported that the suspect was in a nearby camp and wanted to surrender to the police. Due to logistical challenges, a team from Brokopondo police, Capital Crimes and Forensic Investigation only went to the area on Saturday.
There the suspect was handcuffed. During the investigation, a handbag containing various types of ammunition belonging to the suspect was seized. With the cooperation of an entrepreneur, the body of the victim and the suspect were transferred to Paramaribo that afternoon by a chartered plane.
Upon arrival at Zorg en Hoop airport, the police were surprised by a group of people, probably acquaintances of the victim, who had stormed the airport. Due to force majeure, the police were unable to stop the group at that time, giving them the opportunity to assault the suspect.
The police managed to get the suspect out of the group’s hands. He was then transferred to the Capital Offenses department. After medical treatment in the Emergency Department of the University Hospital Paramaribo, he was brought before him.
According to the police, strict action will be taken against people who have been guilty of abuse or have taken the law into their own hands. The investigation into the shooting incident and assault continues.
