In a political scenario frequently marked by uncertainty and short-termism, preserving the islands of technical excellence of the State is a national imperative. Therefore, the recent decision of the Senate plenary session to elect José Ricardo Stok, Juan José Marthans and Oswaldo Molina as new directors of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) for the period 2026-2031 deserves to be welcomed. This is a successful step that strengthens a key institution for caring for our macroeconomic balances and defending the purchasing power of Peruvian households, especially those most vulnerable to the scourge of inflation.

With this vote, the issuing entity finally completes its highest institutional leadership body. The new members will join a collegiate body that already includes Inés Marylin Choy Chong, Luis Miguel Palomino Bonilla and Gustavo Adolfo Yamada Fukusaki, previously appointed by the Executive and holders of equally impeccable credentials. All of them will accompany the management led by Julio Velarde, who has been in charge of the entity for 20 years with historical records of good inflation management and various international awards that distinguish him as a central banker.
The constitutional autonomy of the BCR only bears true fruit when it is supported by the professional suitability and independence of judgment of those who make its decisions. By forming a board of high technical caliber, Peru ensures the continuity of a prudent, predictable monetary policy that is free from populist temptations.
