NEW COMPANY IN THE GROUP
On Thursday, a new company in the Air Greenland group took over responsibility for all the practical work around planes and passengers at the airports.
Although other companies flies to Greenland, in practice it is Air Greenland that takes care of the plane when it lands – takes care of check-in, boarding, freight, luggage, preparing the plane and so on. The new company does not change that.
The new company is called Greenland Handling A/S and gathers responsibility for ground handling in an independent organization that will handle passengers, aircraft and freight in Nuuk and Ilulissat as well as passengers in Qaqortoq, Sisimiut and Upernavik.
New agreements for the New Year
The existing ground handling agreements for 2026 will continue unchanged until the end of the year. Greenland Handling then enters into individual agreements with the airlines.
Ground handling is all the practical work around the plane and the passengers while the plane is at the airport. This includes check-in and boarding, handling luggage and freight, helping passengers and preparing the plane so that it is ready for the next departure.
– The company was established in order to focus efforts on all the practical matters in connection with the arrivals and departures of the planes, explains managing director of Air Greenland, Jakob Nitter Sørensen.
– The establishment will strengthen the company’s focus on ground handling and support the increasing traffic volume. The development also places greater demands on capacity, specialization and a clear organizational separation between airline operations and ground handling.
– We are in the midst of the biggest change to Greenland’s aviation infrastructure in several decades. The increasing amount of traffic increases the need for a strong and specialized company that can deliver professional ground handling. Greenland Handling must prepare us for that development and ensure a clear separation between the role of airline and the role of service provider.”
140 employees
The new company has more than 140 employees spread over Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq. The position in the Air Greenland group gives the opportunity to continue investing in employees, skills, equipment and capacity.

The new company is managed by Kunuunnguaq H. Overgaard, who over the past 16 years has worked in both commercial and operational functions at Air Greenland.
He sees the company as an opportunity to gather and further develop the competences that air Greenland has in the area.
– With the new company, we can further develop them with the area as a core task. Our task is to deliver a professional and efficient service to airlines and passengers, says Kunuunnguaq H. Overgaard.
