That brings us to the man who got the job. Michel Chebat now sits at the helm of the Ministry of National Security, following the Prime Minister’s recent Cabinet reshuffle. Today, News Five got the opportunity to ask PM John Briceño why Chebat was his choice, and why the change came when it did. Here is what he told us.

“Well I think that is a, that is an issue that all Prime Minister’s have to be able to find the best fit with what we have. It is unfortunate that the report form the Auditor General is not ready. I understand it is a lot of work you have to do and I have not in any way spoken to her. We are allowing her to be able to go through the entire process and that will not fo until sometime next year. I said three months and the three months was up. And ministers were getting a bit, what is the right word, they were not too comfortable knowing whether they were going to be there or not. And Minister Espat decided that at the end of the day he wanted to stay with infrastructure development, a ministry which he has been doing a good job. So, I had no hesitation when he said he would rather stay where he is. So I felt that he next person I think that can do a good job was Minister Chebat, one because his background as an attorney can help him to understand the laws when it comes to policing. Also, I believe he is a no nonsense, hands-on and a person with a strong personality to make positive changes in the Belize Police Department and find ways how we can combine both BDF and the Police to provide the necessary service to keep Belizeans safe.”
