SAN MARINO – The debate in the Council Commission, which met this morning, returned to the frequency of mammography screening promoted by the Institute for Social Security (ISS) and focused on the need to maintain annual checks and on the opportunity to scientifically evaluate any changes to the protocols.
The opposition presented an Agenda, illustrated by the commissioner Gaetano Troina (D-ML) and signed by the minority forces, to commit the Government to confirm the annual frequency of the exams and to require a rigorous scientific study before any change.
During the discussion, the councilors Emanuele Santi (Network) e Matteo Casali (RF) criticized the communication methods and the method followed, recalling a Radiology policy document which envisaged the transition to biannual checks, with the aim of reducing services by 25% by 2025.
The Secretary of State for Health Massimo Andrea Ugolini and the representatives of the majority confirmed that mammographic screening officially maintains its annual frequency. Ugolini also announced the start of a scientific study lasting five years, carried out by the ISS in collaboration with the Epidemiological Observatory and the Bioethics Committee.
The research will serve to analyze the effectiveness and appropriateness of the San Marino model compared to international directives. The Secretary of State also ruled out the possibility of privatizing the service.
The Agenda presented by the opposition was ultimately rejected with 8 votes against and 3 in favour.
