The coalition will change the time zone again

The coalition will change the time zone again

Despite the negative economic consequences, a majority in Inatsisartut will return to UTC-3.

    – We have decided to go back to UTC-3 based on the many people who have given a response to the consultation. Therefore, we recommend that it be approved, said Bo Martinsen (D) in a joint statement from the coalition parties.

From the pulpit in Inatsisartut stated the chairman of Naalakkersuisut the negative economic consequences for business by going back to the UTC-3 time zone and abolishing daylight saving time.

Despite this, IA, Demokraatit and Atassut will vote in favor. Bo Martinsen (D) said so in a joint statement from the coalition parties.

    – We have decided to go back to UTC-3 on the basis of the many people who have given a response to the consultation. We therefore recommend that it be approved.

Precisely the great desire among the population to change the time zone was used as the supporting argument. At the time of writing, 4142 have signed a petition to change the time zone back.

The original bill comes from Siumut, but it is an amendment from the Law Committee, which the coalition supports.

The amendment states that summer time must be abolished from next year and that in 2028 we must switch to time zone UTC-3.

    – The coalition group has announced that the time zone will be moved again, and we are very grateful for that, said member of Siumut Erik Jensen.

18 voted for, 0 voted against and six abstained.

Bureau for Inatsisartut informs Sermitsiaq that the proposal must be 3. processed on October 21, when it must be finally adopted.

If Inatsisartut finally adopts the Legislative Committee’s amendment proposal, it will mean that we will not switch to summer time in 2027, and in 2028, instead of switching to summer time, the time zone will move back to UTC-3. This will affect the time difference to Denmark and when the sun rises.

    Naleraq’s proposal must be rejected

Siumut and Naleraq have submitted two nearly identical bills to move the time zone back to UTC-3 and abolish daylight saving time. The difference between the two proposals is that Naleraq requires the citizens of Qaanaaq, Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit to be consulted before a decision is made to change the time in these areas.

Naleraq’s proposal was also debated today, but here the recommendation from the coalition parties was that the proposal should be rejected.

This met with great criticism from Naleraq, who does not understand why the other parties do not want to hear the citizens in the outer areas.

    – It is very unfortunate that East Greenland and North Greenland are not respected, that the hearings we have demanded are rejected, said Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam (N) in the hall.

    GREENLAND’S TIME ZONES

Greenland is divided into three time zones.

The common time standard, which includes most of the country, is in the UTC -2 time zone.

Pituffik Space Base is in the Eastern American time zone UTC -4.

The weather station Danmarkshavn in the National Park in East Greenland is in the time zone UTC +0.

In October 2023, the majority of West and East Greenland time zone changed from UTC -3 to UTC -2.

In March 2024, Ittoqqortoormiit also switched to UTC -2 from UTC -1.

With the exception of Danmarkshavn and Pituffik Space Base, the rest of the country uses summer and winter time.

However, Erik Jensen from Siumut pointed out that in their proposal it is stated that Naalakkersuisut can lay down rules that specified areas must follow a different time zone. Thus, the possibility of creating other time zones does not disappear.

Naleraq is happy that there is now a mood to abolish daylight saving time and change the time zone, but they do not understand why it has to be done in two stages. They wanted the time zone to be adjusted on October 25, 2026, when we transition to winter time.

Six voted in favor of Naleraq’s proposal, 17 voted against and two abstained.
