(KPL) Authorities in Luang Prabang Province have officially launched a new climate adaptation initiative aimed at empowering ethnic communities, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on April 23.
The project, titled the Mekong Adaptation Project (MAP): “Empowering Ethnic Communities for Participatory Climate Change Adaptation,” will run through May 31, 2029.
The agreement was signed by Somveophet Douangprasith, Head of the Luang Prabang Provincial Agriculture and Environment Department; Keopalinah Vongphosy, Acting Representative of CARE International in Lao PDR; and Thong Aly, Head of the Phongsaly Provincial Agriculture and Environment Department.
The ceremony was witnessed by Chindavong Phosikham, Vice Chairman of the Luang Prabang Provincial Administration, along with other officials.
The project aims to strengthen climate resilience, promote gender equality, and advance social inclusion, particularly among ethnic communities.
It will focus on empowering women, youth, and people with disabilities in 20 villages across Chomphet District and May District to take leading roles in climate adaptation.
Key activities include promoting climate-smart agriculture, strengthening community safety nets to address climate-related risks, enhancing inclusive decision-making, and supporting village savings groups to improve financial independence.
The project has a total budget of approximately 2.47 million Australian dollars, funded by the Australian Government through the Mekong-Australia Partnership.
It will be implemented by CARE International in Lao PDR in cooperation with provincial authorities in Luang Prabang and Phongsaly Province.
Mr. Chindavong said the project marks an important step in strengthening regional cooperation and improving living conditions in remote areas.
He noted that the initiative will promote sustainable agriculture, encourage community participation, and contribute to poverty reduction, while expressing appreciation for the financial and technical support provided by development partners.
