PARA — After detailed information from the intelligence service, a mixed team from the Suriname Police Force, consisting of members of the Narcotics Brigade, the Intelligence Service and the Arrest Team (AT), went to the Goliath area in the Para district on Sunday. During the mission, the troops encountered an illegal airstrip. A burnt-out twin-engine aircraft was found in the immediate vicinity, the engines of which were buried. There was also a large amount of fuel barrels.
The Suriname Police Corps wrote on its website on Tuesday (today) that it turned out that an abandoned section of road was used as an airstrip. Fresh tire tracks on the runway showed that an aircraft had operated there very recently.
When inspecting the area, law enforcement officers found dozens of barrels and jerry cans along the entire length of the runway. Some of this was filled with jet fuel, while the rest was empty. The burnt-out twin-engine aircraft was found not far from the runway.
After coordination with the Public Prosecution Service (OM), all barrels containing the suspected aviation fuel were destroyed on site. The Public Prosecution Service has ordered the illegal runway to be made unusable. The Narcotics Brigade is responsible for further investigation.
