The electoral commission has called on Government to make improvements to the administration of future elections, including steps to ensure its staffs’ capacity to “freely observe the voting process” is not impeded.
President Catherine Connolly received more than 63pc first preferences last October, while Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys received almost 30pc and Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin, who withdrew before polling day, received 7pc.
