The Nomination Commission for Attorney General delivered this Friday, April 24, to the Presidency of the Republic the new list of six candidates to occupy the position of head of the Public Ministry (MP) during the period 2026-2030, after a reevaluation of files ordered by the Constitutional Court (CC).
The new list, sent to President Bernardo Arévalo for the final election, had one change: the exclusion of the lawyer Zoila Morales Valdizón. In his place, the Commission voted for Carlos Alberto García Alvarado, current MP prosecutor.
The reevaluation of the 48 candidates arose after the CC annulled the first selection, stating that the professional experience of some candidates was wrongly accredited to integrate the list of candidates seeking to lead the MP for the next four years.
Those selected on the new list are Julio César Rivera Clavería, Néctor Guilebaldo de León, Beyla Estrada Barrientos, Gabriel Estuardo García Luna, Carlos Alberto García Alvarado and César Augusto Ávila Aparicio.
In this second vote, the current attorney general, Consuelo Porras, sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for allegations of corruption and undermining democracy, was once again left out after failing to obtain more support votes.
During the session, the commissioners emphasized that the letter to send the list to President Arévalo de León must reflect that the process responds strictly to compliance with the mandate of the CC.
The new process to integrate the final list was carried out despite the fact that various commissioners questioned the criteria of the constitutional court, which ruled that the career as a judge does not count as a professional exercise to qualify for the position.
President Arévalo de León, who is in a fight with Porras over his attempts to interfere in the 2023 election results, will have until May 16 to designate the new head of the Public Ministry from among the proposed names.
