Tourism in the state of Batna is witnessing increasing inflows estimated at hundreds per day, in light of the growing demand for its archaeological, natural and heritage sites, in conjunction with an increasing attendance of foreign tourists coming from 35 countries.
The ancient city of Timgad, as one of the most important tourist destinations in the state, stands out at the forefront of this movement, as its archaeological site received, on October 1, 2026, tourist groups that included hundreds of tourists coming from England, Italy, France, and Poland, while on October 3, it received delegations from Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, Egypt, China, and Tunisia.
The importance of Timgad is highlighted by the fact that it is one of the largest Roman cities in the world and not only in Algeria. It has preserved its shape and components, and offers tourists interested in heritage and history a tremendous model of architecture, while its museum contains 84 rare mosaics, according to the director of the Timgad Museum and Site and the sites of Imdaghasn, Zana and Tabna, who adds to Al-Shorouk daily: “Timgad is witnessing a huge tourist influx, as we have recorded remarkable growth, as it was previously receiving batches of 20 to thirty tourists, but for weeks we have been recording a continuous daily visit of between 150 to 200 foreign tourists from different countries, especially on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, while on the rest of the days we record delegations of between 40 and 50 tourists per day.”
The director explains this increase by saying: “This is due to the facilities that the state has approved for foreigners, in addition to our country’s availability on the safety and peace index, as Algeria is considered a safe country, in addition to other accompanying efforts in classification, as several funerary shrines will be classified within the Augustinian path, and this will inevitably double the number of arrivals in the future, in light of the rising indicators, as the day before yesterday a German university delegation visited the ancient city.”
These are in addition to tourists of different nationalities who visited the state of Batna during the recent period, in an image that reflects the expanding circle of interest in the Batna destination, which combines Roman and Numidian archaeological sites, cultural heritage, and diverse natural landscapes of mountains, caves and forests.
The flow figures recorded at the level of hotel establishments confirm this trend, as the number of arrivals reached 50,567 tourists in 2023, including 46,767 Algerians and 3,800 foreigners. Then the state recorded 49,696 tourists in 2024, including 45,187 Algerians and 4,509 foreigners.
The number rose in 2025 to 57,198 tourists, including 50,167 Algerians and 7,031 foreigners, while the number of registered arrivals as of August 31, 2026 reached about 39,265 tourists, including 35,756 Algerians and 3,509 foreigners, which raises the number of foreign visitors to 18,849, without counting September’s inflows. And the beginning of this October.
Thus, the total hotel flows recorded from the year 2023 until the end of August 2026 amounted to about 196,726 arrivals. These numbers relate to those registered at the level of hotel establishments and do not necessarily include all visitors who go to tourist sites without spending the night.
The nationalities that appeared in visits in recent days give a clear picture of the breadth of the geographical map of tourism coming to Batna, from all continents of the world, from Europe, Asia and Africa, as delegations included visitors from England, Italy, France, Poland, Germany, Japan, South Korea and China, in addition to Egypt and Tunisia.
Timgad remains one of the most prominent elements of attraction in this tourist movement, with the remains of the ancient Roman city and its landmarks, in addition to other sites that the state abounds in, which makes Batna combine in its tourist space between history, antiquities, nature and heritage.
With hundreds of visitors continuing to arrive daily, Batna appears to be witnessing a growing tourism activity, not only measured by the number of visitors registered in hotels, but also by the multiplicity of nationalities that have begun to discover the state’s sites and historical landmarks, as a result of promotion through social media and also the existing coordination with the ancient city of Constantine, where the distance between the two cities, which does not exceed 100 km, helps in introducing Constantine tourists to Timgad and vice versa, in an elegant tourist interaction between the two states. The two historical ones.
