The founder and Honorary Patron of the Myanmar Geosciences Society (MGS), retired Professor of the Department of Geology at Yangon University, Dr U Thein, passed away on 5 October at 90.
The Myanmar Geosciences Society announced the news so that students and colleagues near and far may be informed, noting that the professor passed away at Shwegondine Specialist Hospital in Yangon.
The late Professor Dr U Thein was a key expert in Myanmar’s earthquake safety and research studies. Since the establishment of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee (MEC), he consistently provided essential geological advice and expertise. Furthermore, he personally drafted and compiled the Seismic Zone Map of Myanmar, which was published in 2001.
He was also a prominent scholar who spent decades educating and nurturing generations of young geologists across various domestic universities, including Yangon University. — TWA/ZN
