A detail on the official profile of the United States Embassy in Tirana on Instagram has attracted attention. Official profile
@usembassytirana follows a total of 113 profiles, among them American officials, accounts of US embassies in different countries, as well as figures of art, culture, media and civil society in Albania.
But there is a peculiarity in this list, the Embassy follows only one Albanian politician. It is not the account of Prime Minister Edi Rama, nor of any of the government ministers, and certainly not any representative of the opposition.
Among the 113 profiles followed by the American Embassy, the name of Elisa Spiropali, former Speaker of the Assembly and former Foreign Minister, stands out.
In the Embassy’s official profile, Spiropali turns out to be the only Albanian politician followed by @usembassytirana.
This detail, in an institutional account that follows a relatively limited number of profiles, naturally raises questions. Is it simply a choice of social networks or a signal for the relationship that Washington has built with the former president of the Assembly and the former head of Albanian diplomacy?
The answer remains to be seen from the following developments and political movements.
Another element that gives interest to this detail is Spiropal’s relationship with the American administration during the time he headed the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. On September 24, 2025, at the invitation of the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, Spiropali attended a transatlantic dinner in New York.
So, a follow on Instagram can be just a common action on social networks. But the fact that Spiropali is the only Albanian political name in the list of 113 profiles makes this a detail that is, at least, worth observing.
