Since April, More than 60 people have died in state custody in Venezuelaaccording to figures from the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory (OVP).
The most recent case, reported by the organization this Monday, occurred in the Juan López New Man Training Center, in TocuyitoCarabobo state. This is the inmate Luis Alejandro García, 30 years old, who died presumably due to tuberculosis.
The suspicion of this case set off alarms among the prison population due to the high risk of contagion, aggravated by overcrowding in the penitentiary center, operating at more than 157% of its capacity.
More than 2,200 people remain held in a facility designed for 1,400. In these conditions overpopulation facilitates the transmission of diseasesa risk that is aggravated by the difficulties in accessing medical care, the NGO warned.
He requested immediate intervention to address the structural and sanitary conditions of the facility.
“From the OVP we demand an urgent health evaluation of the imprisoned population“, the detection and timely care of possible cases of tuberculosis and an investigation that will clarify the circumstances in which García died and the medical care he received,” public the organization in social networks.
