Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, called for mechanisms to be found for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the work of the United Nations. She stated that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its population.
Call for Taiwan’s participation
According to Heine, Taiwan and its 23 million residents are a reality, and the UN must remain inclusive and effective in the future. She stressed that this requires ensuring appropriate formats for Taiwan’s participation in UN meetings.
The president of the Marshall Islands also said that UN member states may come under pressure to agree with the claim that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 constitutes a legal basis for coercion or war concerning Taiwan. In her view, such a position could harm freedom of navigation in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes.

Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, recognized the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China at the UN and enabled Beijing to replace the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name, among the permanent members of the UN Security Council. Heine noted that Taiwan is not mentioned in the text of the document.
Tuvalu’s position
Tuvalu Prime Minister Feleti Teo also called for conditions to be created for the meaningful participation of Taiwan’s 23.5 million residents in the UN and its affiliated agencies. He stated that Taiwan has demonstrated its ability to be a reliable and constructive partner in responding to global challenges, and that its exclusion weakens multilateral cooperation.
Teo expressed concern over increased military activity around Taiwan, which, he said, threatens stability in the Taiwan Strait, international transportation, trade and security in the Pacific region and beyond. Paraguay, Eswatini and Palau had also previously called for Taiwan to be included in the UN, Taipei Times reports.
