The meeting between former President Leonel Fernández and representatives of the Government, which seeks to achieve a national agreement to confront the global crisis and reduce its impact on Dominican families in the face of the war conflict in the Middle East, will be held at six in the afternoon this Wednesday.
Fernández’s meeting with ministers José Ignacio Paliza (Presidency), Magín Díaz (Treasury) and Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón (Industry and Commerce) will be held at the headquarters of the Global Democracy and Development Foundation (Funglode).
The former president is expected to be accompanied by part of the economic team of the People’s Force, the party of which he presides.
The meetings with political leaders about the economic situation in the Dominican Republic and the Middle East crisis began last Friday when the three ministers already mentioned visited the former head of state, Danilo Medina, at the presidential house of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
Several days after that meeting, Medina would denounce that the Government currently does not have a concrete plan to face the impact of the crisis that the Middle East war conflict is generating in the country.
To which Paliza responded that the conversations that the Government is holding with sectors of the opposition are a democratic exercise of consultation, which do not seek to enter into confrontational political debates, but rather solutions.
Prior to the meeting with Medina, the Government also held a meeting with the business sector; According to statements by the vice president of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), Mario E. Pujols, the Executive Branch also did not present a “concrete plan” in relation to how it would face the crisis that has led to the increase of 24 pesos per gallon of gasoline in recent weeks.
The consensus meetings were ordered by President Luis Abinader last Sunday, April 5.
Abinader is expected not to participate
So far, the expectation is that the president will not participate in the meeting with Fernández; He was also not present at the meeting with Medina last Friday.
