The Government of the Republic of Ireland announced its full support for the coach of its national football team, Heimir Hallgrimsson.
In the past few days, Heimir Hallgrimsson spoke about the just Palestinian cause, and said: “We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against it. We are playing against Israel, not with it.” Note that this 59-year-old technician is of Icelandic nationality.
The Republic of Ireland national team will face the Zionist team in the next few days, for the group stage of the European Nations League competition.
Coach Hemir Hallgrimsson’s statements angered the Zionist Football Association, which responded by describing him as “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy.”
In a report published by the French newspaper “Le Parisien” on Wednesday, Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin responded, saying that the Zionist Football Association’s statements were “unacceptable” and must be withdrawn. He added that the position of the Irish national team coach reflects concerns about the extent of the loss of life and destruction in Gaza.
Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin – whose country is one of the most prominent supporters of the Palestinian cause in Europe – concluded: “Israel cannot continue to deny what the world knows.”
More than 160 athletes signed an open letter calling for a boycott of the two matches, while demonstrators gathered last Monday in front of the Irish national team hotel in the capital, Dublin. More demonstrations are scheduled to be held across the country ahead of the start of the two interviews.
The Irish Football Association issued a resolution last November calling on the European Football Association to suspend the participation of the Zionist entity in international football competitions.
Ireland’s home match, scheduled to be held on October 4, was moved to Serbia for security reasons. While the first match will take place on September 27 in Hungary.
