PLANS FOR A statue honouring Olympic champion Julien Alfred are moving forward as the Government of St Lucia advances its commitment to recognise her historic achievement at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, a release from the Office of the Saint Lucia Prime Minister states.
Alfred became Saint Lucia’s first Olympic gold medallist when she won the women’s 100 metres in a record time of 10.72 seconds. Her victory placed Saint Lucia on the world stage and marked one of the proudest moments in the nation’s history.
Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation Kenson Casimir, provided an update during a pre-Cabinet press briefing on Monday, September 21, 2026, confirming that the project is progressing through the advanced planning and design stage.
Architects, designers and technical officers from the ministries responsible for planning, infrastructure, tourism and sports have been working together on the project. A site has also been identified and purchased in the vicinity of the Julien Alfred Highway.
Several artistic concepts have been prepared and are being assessed as the Government works towards selecting a fitting representation of Saint Lucia’s first Olympic champion.
“I believe Julien Alfred absolutely deserves it. I am very happy and excited about some of the designs I have seen,” Minister Casimir said.
The proposed location is undergoing technical assessment, with road safety, visibility and public access among the considerations guiding the final decision.
Casimir said the statue is intended to become a national landmark where Saint Lucians and visitors can celebrate Alfred’s achievement. It will also serve as a source of inspiration for children and young athletes who aspire to follow in her footsteps.
The Government has honoured several commitments in recognition of Alfred’s achievements, including providing financial support for her preparation for the Olympic Games, and work on the statue represents another commitment now being advanced.
