Georgia and the Republic of Nauru (Naoero) are set to establish diplomatic relations officially, the Georgian government administration has announced.
The relevant protocol will be signed in New York during Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit to the United Nations General Assembly session, News Georgia reports.
The Georgian government issued a decree authorising the signing of the memorandum on Friday.
The breakthrough in bilateral relations follows a phone call between Kobakhidze and Nauruan President David Adeang, during which the Georgian prime minister expressed appreciation for Nauru’s decision to return to the framework of international law and proposed formalising diplomatic ties between the two countries.
At the end of July 2026, the Nauruan government fully annulled its 2009 decisions, withdrawing its recognition of the independence of the occupied regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) and severing all contacts with them.
In Sukhumi, the move was described as “forced”, while Tbilisi and its international partners welcomed it as a victory for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Following Nauru’s decision, the number of states recognising Georgia’s occupied territories as “independent” has fallen to four: Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Syria.
Previously, Vanuatu revoked its recognition in 2013, followed by Tuvalu in 2014.
International diplomatic consultations are also continuing with Syria’s new authorities regarding the possible reversal of decisions adopted by Bashar al-Assad’s regime in 2018.
