President of Dominica Sylvanie Burton is set to represent the country at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where world leaders will address a range of pressing international issues.
According to a press release from the Office of the President, Burton will leave Dominica on Saturday, September 19, and is scheduled to deliver Dominica’s national statement during the General Debate on Tuesday, September 22. She is expected to return to Dominica on Thursday, September 24.
The 81st General Assembly session opened on September 8, 2026, with the General Debate scheduled from September 22 to 28. This year’s theme is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
The theme comes as countries grapple with conflicts, climate change, economic uncertainty, growing inequality and rapid advances in technology, while also facing questions about the effectiveness of international cooperation.
In her address, Burton is expected to present Dominica’s position on the major issues confronting the international community and reiterate the country’s support for multilateral cooperation, peace, sustainable development and climate action.
The Office of the President said her remarks will also emphasize the importance of turning international commitments into tangible outcomes for people.
Dominica has continued to call for development financing that takes into account the particular vulnerabilities of small states, along with increased international assistance for climate adaptation and resilience, reports the government.
The President will be accompanied by First Gentleman Gilbert Burton; Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy Dr. Vince Henderson; Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Philbert Aaron; Deputy Permanent Representative Kelver Darroux; Sheldon Peter Anthony; and other members of the staff of Dominica’s UN Mission.
During Burton’s absence from the State, Mrs. Josette Matthew will perform the functions of Acting President.
