US President Donald Trump removed Venezuela this Wednesday from the list of countries that, according to Washington, They are failing to comply with their obligations in the fight against drug trafficking, in what is another example of the rapprochement with the administration of the Venezuelan president in charge, Delcy Rodríguez.
Trump decided to remove the nation from a list that still includes Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burma and Colombia, as indicated in the “Presidential Determination on the main transit or production countries for illicit drugs for fiscal year 2027”, published this Wednesday by the State Department, Efe reported.
This list includes States that during the last 12 months have “demonstrably failed to comply” with their “obligations derived from international agreements to combat drug trafficking”, as well as with the measures required in this area by US legislation.
The president states in the document that Washington’s assistance to Bolivia, Burma and Colombia “is currently vital to the national interests of the United States.”
Although Trump maintains Venezuela on the list of “main transit or production countries for illicit drugs,” he assures that “the drastic political changes in South America over the last year have created historic opportunities for United States cooperation with governments in the region.”
“In Venezuela, thanks to my administration achieving the arrest and removal of former illegitimate dictator and drug trafficker Nicolás Maduro, we are already seeing the results of growing cooperation with the country’s interim government to combat the cartels, including the elimination of Niño Guerrero, leader of the Tren de Aragua,” writes the Republican.
“Given the positive progress made under Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, I have determined that Venezuela should no longer be singled out for having demonstrably failed to meet its drug control commitments. I look forward to seeing continued, measurable progress by the interim government in dismantling narcoterrorist groups and disrupting drug trafficking through Venezuela to the United States,” Trump adds.
This year’s list of “main transit or production countries for illicit drugs” remains unchanged, and includes, in addition to Venezuela, Afghanistan, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Burma, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama and Peru.
