A flood watch is in effect for Dominica as a tropical wave and an upper-level trough bring increased rainfall and unsettled conditions to the island.
The Dominica Meteorological Service said the watch took effect at noon Wednesday, September 16, and will remain in place until 6 AM Thursday, September 17.
Residents can expect cloudy to overcast conditions, scattered showers that could become moderate to heavy, gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms through this afternoon and tonight. Rainfall totals could reach up to two inches, with higher amounts possible in elevated areas.
The Dominica Meteorological Service is advising people in areas vulnerable to flooding, landslides and falling rocks to remain informed, stay alert and exercise caution. A flood watch means flooding is possible.
Winds are expected from the northeast to southeast at 15 to 35 km/h, with higher gusts. No other warning or advisory is currently in effect.
Sea conditions are expected to remain slight to moderate, with waves ranging from 1 to 2 metres (3 to 7 feet). Waves are expected to be around three feet along the west coast and could reach seven feet along the east coast. Small craft operators and sea bathers are being urged to exercise caution.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into tonight. By Thursday, a relatively dry atmosphere and the return of Saharan dust are expected.
