The United Kingdom has elevated its diplomatic relations with the interim government of Venezuela at the ambassador level, the official account of the British Embassy in Caracas.
Colin DickHead of Mission of the British Embassy in Caracas, expressed that the United Kingdom remains committed to supporting Venezuela in the long term.
“This decision will allow us to deepen our cooperation on issues of common interest; among them: move towards a democratic transitioncontribute to economic recovery and continue to support reconstruction efforts after the devastating earthquakes that have affected so many families and communities,” said Dick.
Chris Elmoreminister for Latin America, sent a letter to the British Parliament informing of the decision. The letter mentions the commitment to holding free and fair elections in Venezuela, as well as promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The minister explained that the arrest of Nicolás Maduro on January 3 created the opportunity “for the international community to contribute to the restoration of democracy”.
“Working in close coordination with the United States and other international partners, the United Kingdom believes that this moment demands a pragmatic commitment to promote a transition credible and encourage additional progress on reforms,” Elmore added in the letter.
He also celebrated the talks between a sector of the oppositionled by Dinorah Figuera, with the interim government.
“This approach does not represent any change in the assessment that the United Kingdom has made of recent electoral processes, including those held in 2024, nor does it constitute an endorsement of any of the parties.. The historical position of the United Kingdom has been to recognize States, not governments,” he added.
